Good News |
The Gospel is the Good News Of God, shown to us in the life of his son, Jesus the Christ. It reminds us of the true human condition, God’s original intent for all people, and his provision for our restorations. |
God created us to have fellowship with him beside one another. Yet even the best of us knows that there times when we do not do the good things we should do, we do the evil things we should not do, we harbor ill thoughts in the depths of our hearts. It's like we aimed for the center of the target, but missed the mark. Regardless of how close we came, we still missed the center. The Greek archers had a word for this: sin. Today, for most of us, this word has lost its archery meaning, and just refers to our shortcomings when compared to God's perfect ideal. This is the condition of all people, that we all fall short of absolute perfection |
What is the result of sin? We do not enjoy all of life the way we should. We suffer physical consequences of sickness and death. We suffer the emotional consequences of failing to live as we ought. We are dissatisfied with our lives, because they are not everything that God designed for us. We are living apart from God, apart from his design for us. The ultimate consequence of living apart from God is to live forever apart from God |
How are we to be rescued from this situation? We can't rescue ourselves. Our only hope is for someone else to save us, but when we look around we discover that everyone else is in the same mess. The only way we can be rescued is for God himself to provide a way, and he did. He sent his own son, Jesus to rescue us from the consequences of sin. As the only person to live a life free from all sin, only Jesus stands above the mess, reaching our his hand to pull us out, too. All that we need to do is recognize the mess we're in, and take his hand to be pulled out |
Once you are rescued, you will be able to live a new life. Sure, some of the things you used to call "fun" will need to be abandoned; you've been pulled from a muddy pit so you should strive to leave it forever. You'll still face some consequences of your old life; there's still mud all around you, and some of your old friends are throwing more at you. But you can live closer to the mark, living a life many have found more satisfying than anything they knew before. But God has made provision for your full release from your old way of dying to a new way of living. He has even given us a "helper," the Holy Spirit, to give us a new power to live a new life. As you begin to live a life closer to God, you'll forever live a life closer to God, both in this world and, yes, after death |
What is the condition of all people? |
How do I accept this rescue? Like so many profound changes, it is simple to accept Jesus' offer of help. He can hear your words, your thoughts, even the desires of your heart which you feel but cannot express. God already knows the mess you're in, and the needs you have. Just admit that you sin, that you cannot save yourself from this mess, and you want to accept Jesus' offer of rescue and new life |
What next? Just as with your first birth, this new life will need nurturing for you to grow. You'll want to become involved in some local church for its teaching and encouragement, and spend time reading God's Word, the Bible (start with the part called "the Gospel of John"). Get to know other people who have been rescued by Jesus, and tell others that rescue is possible.
